Configuration and application

The main application of access points is the connection of wireless networks to wired networks. Access points are good solutions for companies that want to extend the range of their network or expand it. Thanks to access points, users are able to seamlessly connect their devices to the currently operational wireless network in a given area.

Catalyst 9130 is a product range by Cisco, which supports the most up-to-date functionalities featured in network devices. Next to 9115, 9117, and 9120, the 9130 are Wi-Fi 6 access points, which makes them corporate class devices of the future. The main part of installing these devices is mounting them to a wall or a ceiling properly.

Key technical features

Catalyst 9130 can handle a large number of connected devices, which provides high scalability and performance. To meet the requirements imposed on Internet of Things devices, besides the latest Wi-Fi standard, it was necessary to implement further functionalities.

  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
Support for the latest Wi-Fi standard ensures the top performance of the advanced multimedia transmission, 4K and 8K video, and operation of multiple IoT devices. Works perfectly in offices with fully wireless networks.
  • Use of OFDMA modulation
Thanks to OFDMA-based planning, it’s possible to achieve higher efficiency by transferring user data in a one-channel stream. For OFDMA, the band is divided into time-frequency units, which can be assigned to individual clients. Dividing one channel into several possible subcarriers in this way enables significantly decreased latency, which makes these units a good solution for IoT applications.
  • Multi-user MIMO for both uplink and downlink transfer.
Cisco Catalyst 9130 is able to support up to 8 parallel Spatial Streams. MU-MIMO enables sending and receiving data to/from multiple clients at once in parallel streams, which enhances the utility of possible bandwidth and comfort of network use. This functionality replaced OFDM, which so far was used for situations where one client occupied the entire channel stream at a given time.
  • BSS Coloring
BSS (Basic Service Set) is a group of devices bound by logic. A single BSS comprises an access point and connected users. To mitigate cross-jamming of clients operating on the same channel, we used BSS Coloring which allows only for coupling devices with different virtual BSS colours. This kind of mechanics enables ignoring transmissions from BSS with another virtual color.
  • Flexible 5 GHz (8×8 in single or 4×4 in double), 2.4 GHz (4×4) Radio and CISCO RF ASIC
Cisco RF is a fully integrated software-defined radio (SDR) capable of sophisticated RF spectrum analysis, and providing Cisco CleanAir function, which detects radio interference sources through radio band scanning.
  • Multigigabit Ethernet Support
Multigigabit Ethernet is able to provide 5 Gb/s and 2.5 Gb/s speed.

Catalyst access points require an obligatory smart license for proper unit use. Valid license type will enable use of full range of functions provided by access points. Catalyst 9130 uses two types of license packs, such as:

Simplified network packs:

  • Network Essentials and Network Advantage

Term-based software packs:

  • Cisco DNA Essentials, Cisco DNA Advantage lub Cisco DNA Premier

Cisco DNA licenses are available for purchase for 3, 5 or 7-year long periods. However, after a given license expires, it’s still possible to use packs such as Network Essentials and Network Advantage.
